Toast Suggested Tip Doesn't Match the Receipt? Check the Math First
Toast bases receipt tip suggestions on the pre-discount total, the split check and your tax setting. Work out the expected number before you treat it as a stale display.
Ryan Speier
Quick answer: when a Toast receipt suggests a tip that doesn't match the bill or the percentages you saved, check the math before you touch any settings. Toast's receipt article says suggested tips are based on the full value before discounts. On a split check they are based on that split check's total, not the original check. Your before-tax or after-tax setting changes the base too. And if the check already has a tip or a mandatory gratuity that goes to the check owner, Toast drops your percentages and suggests an extra 3%, 5% and 7% instead. Only when the number still doesn't fit your settings should you treat it as a stale display. Then confirm the change was saved and published, give handhelds and the Guest-Facing Display (GFD) a few minutes to sync, and only after that follow Toast's documented refresh procedure, writing down your original settings first.
This is a desk check built from three Toast Support articles as they read on October 4, 2026. We did not run anything on a Toast account. The receipts below are fictional, and the arithmetic is ours, worked from Toast's written rules. It is not output from a Toast system. It is written for U.S. locations; Toast's per-device tip setup for Australia, Canada, Ireland and the UK is out of scope.
Who this is for
Owners and managers of a U.S. Toast location who have a guest, server or bookkeeper asking why the suggested tip on a receipt looks off, or who changed their tip percentages and still see the old ones somewhere. The goal is to explain the receipt correctly, or find the real problem, without changing live settings on a guess.
What Toast says decides the suggested tip on a receipt
All of these come from Toast's article Display Suggested Tip Amounts on Receipts, last updated September 17, 2026. That article covers printed and digital receipts. It does not say the same rules apply to online ordering or the Guest-Facing Display, so don't assume they do.
| On the check | What Toast documents |
|---|---|
| A discount | Suggestions are based on the full value before any discount is applied. |
| A split check | Each receipt's suggestions are based on the total of that split check, not the original, unsplit check. |
| Tax | You choose whether the tip is calculated before or after tax. |
| An existing tip or mandatory gratuity | Toast suggests an additional 3%, 5% and 7% instead of your percentages. Those three are fixed and cannot be edited. Toast counts service charges assigned to the check owner here, not employer-kept service charges. |
| Your tip mode | Percentages only, dollars only, or a percentage/dollar mix with a threshold you set for switching from dollars to percentages. In the mix option, Toast says fixed dollar amounts display only on digital receipts. |
| Receipt type | Suggestions appear on the receipt types you pick: credit card receipt, cash receipt and/or the initial itemized receipt. |
"Mandatory gratuity" and "service charge" here are Toast's labels for how a charge is set up in Toast. They are not a legal or tax classification.
Worked examples (fictional receipts)
Each example changes one thing. All of them assume a 20% suggestion in percentage mode, no existing tip and no service charge. None of them needs rounding, because Toast does not publish how it rounds fractions of a cent.
A discount: $16, not $12
Fictional check: $80.00 of food, a $20.00 discount, so the guest owes $60.00 before tax. The location calculates tips before tax.
| Base | 20% suggestion |
|---|---|
| $80.00 full value before the discount (what Toast documents) | $16.00 |
| $60.00 after the discount (not what Toast documents) | $12.00 |
A guest who sees $16.00 on a $60.00 bill may think the receipt is wrong. Under Toast's documented rule, it isn't. Toast's own example lines up with this: with a buy-one-get-one discount on $8 of full-value items, the 10% suggestion is based on the full $8, "thus it is $0.80 rather than $0.40." That figure is Toast's, not ours.
A split check: $8, not $16
Fictional check: $80.00 of food, no discount, split into two checks of $40.00 each. Tips are calculated before tax.
| Base | 20% suggestion |
|---|---|
| $40.00, this split check (what Toast documents) | $8.00 |
| $80.00, the original unsplit check (not what Toast documents) | $16.00 |
The tax setting: $16.00 or $17.28
Fictional check: $80.00 of food, no discount, no split, and $6.40 of tax. The tax figure is made up for the example.
| Your Tip / Tax setting | 20% suggestion |
|---|---|
| Before tax: 20% of $80.00 | $16.00 |
| After tax: 20% of $86.40 | $17.28 |
If the receipt shows $17.28 and you expected $16.00, check the Tip / Tax setting before anything else.
Dollars are not percentages
In dollars-only mode, the three numbers you entered are dollar amounts. A fictional $5 suggestion on an $80 check isn't a broken 5%. It's the dollar option you set. In mix mode, the threshold you set decides when Toast switches from dollar suggestions to percentage suggestions. Toast's article doesn't say what happens when the check lands exactly on the threshold, and it puts the "digital receipts only" note for fixed dollar amounts under the mix option. It doesn't say what a printed receipt shows in dollars-only mode. Ask Toast about either case rather than guessing.
A check that already has a gratuity
Fictional check: a large party with a mandatory gratuity that is assigned to the check owner. Toast says the receipt suggests an extra 3%, 5% and 7% instead of your usual percentages. Toast does not say what dollar amount those percentages are calculated on, so we are not putting a dollar figure here. What you can check: a qualifying check should show 3%, 5% and 7%. If a check like that shows your normal percentages, or a check with no tip or gratuity shows 3%, 5% and 7%, ask Toast about it.
Combinations we can't work out: UNKNOWN
Toast's articles don't spell these out, so the honest answer is UNKNOWN until Toast confirms:
- A discounted check that is also split. Toast doesn't say how a discount is shared between split checks for the suggestion.
- A discount with the after-tax setting. Toast doesn't say which tax amount is added to the pre-discount value.
- A split check with the after-tax setting. Toast says "that split check's total" but doesn't say how tax is shared between splits.
- The dollar amount of the 3%, 5% and 7% suggestions on a check with an existing tip or qualifying gratuity.
- Any case where the result runs past whole cents, because the rounding rule isn't published.
Write UNKNOWN on the worksheet for these and take the filled-in sheet to Toast Support. Don't back into a formula from one receipt.
The check, in order
- Surface and receipt type. Note whether it's a printed or digital receipt, and whether it's a credit card, cash or initial itemized receipt. Make sure that receipt type is selected under Display Tip Percentages on Customer Receipts. The receipt article puts that in Toast Web at Finance > Related > Settings > Guest receipt setup, sometimes under a named receipt setup profile. If the mismatch is on online ordering or the Guest-Facing Display, the receipt rules above may not apply.
- Mode. Percentages, dollars or mix, and the threshold if it's mix. The receipt article puts this in the Tipping section at Front of house > Order screen setup > UI options.
- Discount. If there is one, work the suggestion from the pre-discount value.
- Tax. Confirm whether Tip / Tax is set to before or after tax.
- Split. If the check was split, use that split check's total.
- Existing tip or gratuity. If the check already carries a tip or an owner-assigned mandatory gratuity, expect 3%, 5% and 7%, and skip the math in steps 3 to 5.
- Only then, display freshness. If the number still doesn't fit, move to the next section.
Copyable worksheet
Copy this into your manager log. Fill one per receipt. Don't write a guest's name or card details on it.

If the math fits but the number is still wrong
Now it may be a display that hasn't refreshed. Work through this in order.
- Saved and published. Toast's Set Up Tip Options article says the tip options you choose in Toast Web apply everywhere tipping is enabled, and that changes need Save and then Publish. Making the change needs the 6.6 Restaurant Operations Setup permission.
- Sync time. The same article says changes may take up to a few minutes to sync to handheld devices and the Guest-Facing Display. Wait, then look again.
- Online ordering shows four amounts. For U.S. locations, the same article says UI options lets you edit three tip percentages, but Toast Online Ordering displays four suggested amounts by default. A fourth number online is documented behavior, not proof of a stale setting. The article has its own procedure for editing or removing the fourth amount.
- Toast's refresh procedure. If it still doesn't match, Toast's Suggested Tip Amount Does Not Match article (updated September 17, 2026) gives this sequence in Toast Web. Toggle the Tip & Signature UI setting under Payments > Payment methods > Payment options to whichever option isn't selected, then save and publish. Update the Tip Amounts under Front of house > Order screen setup > UI options, then save and publish. Go back and toggle Tip & Signature UI to its original setting, then save and publish. That is Toast's procedure as written. We haven't run it, and it isn't a guaranteed fix.
Before you follow it, write down or screenshot the current Tip & Signature setting and every tip value, so you can put everything back exactly. The Set Up Tip Options article ties a similar Tip & Signature setting to the layout of the in-restaurant tip and signature screen, so do it outside service, not with guests paying.
The menu paths don't agree
Toast's two articles name this setting differently and put it in different places:
| Toast article | Path and setting it names |
|---|---|
| Suggested Tip Amount Does Not Match | Payments > Payment methods > Payment options, "Tip & Signature UI" |
| Set Up Tip Options, four online amounts section | Finance > Related > Settings > Payment options, Digital Receipt Options, "Tip & Signature Flow" |
| Set Up Tip Options, FAQ | Describes the mismatch procedure as toggling "Tip & Signature Flow" |
The tip values have two names as well: Set Up Tip Options calls the setting Customize Tip Percentages, and the mismatch article says Tip Amounts. Both sit in the Tipping section of UI options. We can't tell from the articles whether the two payment paths are the same setting in two menu layouts. If your Toast Web shows neither path, or you can't tell which one applies, stop and ask Toast Support before toggling anything.
Toast's own pre-call list in Set Up Tip Options: you saved and published, you waited a few minutes for handhelds and the Guest-Facing Display to sync, and you followed the mismatch steps if the problem persisted. Bring the filled-in worksheet too.
The guest still decides
Suggestions are suggestions. Toast's receipt article says the No Tip option can't be removed from receipts. The default tip selection can be one tip amount, No tip, or None, and None makes the guest pick a tip button before signing. The Set Up Tip Options article adds that percentage suggestions can't be removed from the signature screen without turning tipping off entirely. Nothing here claims that different suggestions change what guests leave.
What this post does not cover
- Tip limits, blocked tip entry, and editing a tip after payment. That's a separate question.
- The Tipping setting that can require manager approval for significant tip adjustments.
- Whether a charge counts as a tip or a service charge for wage, payroll or tax purposes. For the service charge side, see our Square automatic service charge checklist, and for year-end reporting, which tipped occupation code goes on a 2026 W-2.
- How online ordering and the Guest-Facing Display calculate their suggestions. The base rules above come from the receipt article only.
- Per-device tip settings outside the U.S.
- Showing discounts and pre-discount subtotals on the receipt itself. Toast's receipt article points to a separate article, Customizing Receipts: Advanced Configuration, which we did not review.
