Will Square Plus Charge Twice for Two Locations at One Address?

Yes: Square Plus bills every active location, whatever the address. What a second location costs, why a Plus-and-Free split isn’t confirmed, and what to check before you change anything.

Quick answer: yes, if you’re on Square Plus. Square Plus and Square Premium charge their monthly fee for every active location in your Square account, and sharing a street address doesn’t change that. A Food Cart location and a Catering location are two locations even when both list the same kitchen. At Square’s current US list price, that’s 2 × $49 = $98 a month for the Plus subscription, against $49 with one active location. On Square Free, extra locations don’t add a monthly charge.

That doesn’t mean the second location should go. First find out what it does for you: an online store, separate deposits, reports your accountant uses, devices. And don’t plan around putting one location on Plus and the other on Free. Nothing Square publishes offers that, and sellers report getting conflicting answers about it.

This covers Square’s current Free, Plus and Premium plans in the US. Square’s pricing page and help articles were read on October 28, 2026, and none of them shows a revision date. List prices aren’t a quote for your account, so check your own bill as well.

What Square counts as a location

A Square location is a record you create in Square Dashboard, not a building. Square’s article on managing multiple locations says one business can have several, and each can have its own business name and hours, its own bank account for deposits, its own reporting and its own devices. The business name you give a location is what customers see on their card statements and digital receipts.

Billing follows those records. Square’s pricing page says the Plus and Premium monthly fee applies to each location you run: $0 per location on Free, $49 on Plus and $149 on Premium. Its article on switching to the new plans says Plus and Premium are priced on your number of active locations, that Free sellers can create multiple locations at no additional cost, and that you can manage the per-location cost by deactivating unused locations. None of these pages groups locations by address. Two active locations at one address are two billed locations.

The $49 covers the subscription only. Card processing is charged separately, and so are Plus extras such as the Square KDS app (listed at $30 a month per device), kiosk software and text messages beyond the 500 included. Hardware is sold separately too.

The fixed cost, worked through

Fictional example. Plan prices and card rates are Square’s US list prices as read on October 28, 2026. The business and its sales figures are made up.

A food cart and catering business is on Plus with two active locations, Cart and Catering, both at the same commissary address.

Active locations on PlusPer monthPer year
11 × $49 = $49$588
22 × $49 = $98$1,176
33 × $49 = $147$1,764

The second location adds $49 a month, or $588 a year. That’s what it costs to keep it active, not money you’re wasting. It only turns into a saving if the work that location does can move somewhere else without costing you more in time, bookkeeping or sales.

Plus also has lower card rates than Free, but don’t count on them to pay for a location. Square’s current US list rates:

Card paymentFreePlusGap
In person (tap, dip or swipe)2.6% + 15¢2.5% + 15¢0.1 point
Online or invoice3.3% + 30¢2.9% + 30¢0.4 point

The cents part is the same on both plans, so only the percentage differs. To cover one $49 location fee from that gap alone, you’d need $49 ÷ 0.001 = $49,000 a month in in-person card sales, or $49 ÷ 0.004 = $12,250 in online and invoice card sales.

Say the business takes $18,000 a month in in-person card sales and $4,000 in online orders and catering invoices, across both locations. On Plus it pays $18,000 × 0.001 = $18 plus $4,000 × 0.004 = $16, so $34 a month less in processing than it would on Free. With two locations, Plus costs $98 − $34 = $64 a month more than Free. With one, it costs $49 − $34 = $15 more.

So this business is paying for Plus features, not cheaper processing. Square’s October 6, 2025 plan announcement lists loyalty programs, marketing tools, staff management and advanced inventory among them, and its pricing page shows the KDS app, kiosk software and text message marketing as unavailable on Free. Whether those features are worth $49 or $98 a month to you is the real decision.

Before you run this math on your own numbers, check the rates on your Pricing & subscriptions page, where Square’s fees article shows how to view rates by location. That article also says sellers with more than $250,000 in annual sales can contact sales about custom rates. For the bigger comparison of processing, software and hardware across providers, see how to choose a POS by total cost.

Can the catering location go on Free?

This question comes from a February 2026 thread in Square’s seller community, where a food cart and catering owner with one physical location asked whether the catering store would cost an extra $49 a month. The owner later posted a support-chat reply that suggested exactly that split: Plus for the cart, Free for catering. The chat said catering could stay on Free unless it sold more than about $12,250 to $12,500 a month (it gave both figures). $12,250 is the online figure in the math above. A September reply in the same thread asked Square to let sellers pay for Plus on one location only.

Square describes the new plans as one subscription with three tiers at a per-location price, in a December 8, 2025 post explaining them. Its plan-switching article says you can’t add or remove features between the tiers. None of the Square pages we read describes choosing a different tier for each location.

Two other sellers posted in 2026 that they couldn’t. One wrote in March that a first support rep said yes and a second said the plan has to be the same for every location. Another, in August, said Plus would be charged on all four of their locations. Those are seller reports, not Square policy, but they point the same way.

So treat a mixed setup as unavailable unless Square confirms it for your account in writing and tells you what your bill will show. The chat’s other idea, running both online stores from one location, needs the same confirmation. Square’s pricing table includes managing multiple Square Online sites on every tier, but nothing we read says two sites on one location keep separate reports or deposits.

A later reply in the thread suggested opening a second Square account on Free for the extra locations. That splits one business across two accounts, and we didn’t verify what carries over or how it would work, so this answer doesn’t cover it.

Check what each location does before you change anything

Square’s help suggests deactivating unused locations to manage the cost. The word that matters is unused. Go through every active location (in Square Dashboard: Account & Settings, then My business, then Locations) and write down:

  • What it’s for, and its sales over the last few months.
  • Its online store, if one is tied to it.
  • Where its deposits go. Separate deposits are a common reason for a second location in the first place.
  • Reports that depend on it, including anything your bookkeeper or accountant pulls by location.
  • Devices and device codes assigned to it, and the business name customers see on their card statements.
  • Anything else that asks for a location: gift cards, invoices, pickup or shipping settings, staff. Check each feature you actually use.

Then compare your list with your bill. Square’s subscriptions article says the Pricing & subscriptions page (Settings, then Account & Settings) shows your plan and its cost, and its Bills section shows each bill. Expect the plan charge to equal your active locations times the plan price, apart from any prorated change mid-cycle. If it doesn’t, ask Square why before you change anything.

A location with no recent sales, no online store, no deposits, no devices and no reports anyone uses is unused. Anything else is doing a job. If you still want to fold it into another location, decide where each of those jobs goes first. Folding it in gives up what made it separate: its sales stop depositing to its own bank account, customers see the other location’s business name on statements and receipts, and its sales stop showing as a separate location in reports. Square’s sales reports on every tier can still break sales down by item and category, so a separate catering category keeps part of the reporting split. It won’t separate deposits.

Three things to know before you touch a location or a plan:

  • You can’t delete a Square location, only deactivate it.
  • If a device holds offline payments that haven’t uploaded, Square warns not to switch locations or sign out, because those payments will be lost. Our guide to Square offline payments covers the upload deadline.
  • A move to a lower tier takes effect at the start of your next billing cycle, and you keep your current features until then.

If you’re still on Square’s older subscriptions

Square calls its earlier, separately priced subscriptions, such as Square for Restaurants, legacy plans. Moving to Free, Plus or Premium is one-way: Square’s help says that once you switch, you can’t go back to any of your prior subscriptions. Its comparison step shows how your current features map to a new plan without switching you. Run that first, work out the new cost from your active locations, and then decide. Don’t switch just to see what the bill looks like.
